This specification uses the heading and master spec numbering system to facilitate inserting the SEALTECH® product terminology into your master specification documents. The SEALTECH product should appear in two sections, Section 04810-Unit Masonry Assemblies and as a separate item, Section # 04811. Water Resistant Masonry “Green Product” Assemblies
SECTION 04811 SEALTECH® Water Resistant Architectural Concrete Masonry Unit
PART 1 GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY
- This section includes interior and exterior, water resistant unit masonry assemblies consisting of,
- Split-face, SEALTECH®, moisture resistant, concrete masonry units, (CMUs) per ASTM C-90 for exterior and interior masonry wall construction.
- Standard-smooth face, SEALTECH moisture resistant, concrete masonry units.
1.2 SUBMITTALS
- Product Data: Submit manufacturer’s product data sheets fully describing each product.
- Samples: Provide water resistant concrete block units and color selections.
- Colors: Submit color charts for each product specified and when requested provide samples of material in required colors.
- Mortar: Provide mix formula including recommended type and proportion of additive required to assure compatibility with the SEALTECH masonry unit for water resistance and bond strength.
- Material Certificates: For each type of product indicated, include statements of material properties indicating compliance with requirements including compliance with standards and type designations within standards:
- Provide certification as a “green building material.”
- Include material test reports substantiating compliance with requirements.
1.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE
- (Individual firm to insert text re: Preconstruction Testing Services)
- Source Limitations for Concrete Masonry Units: Obtain all exposed, moisture resistant, “GREEN” certified, concrete masonry units of specified dimensions, color and texture within acceptable ranges for those characteristics, through one single source manufacturer.
- Testing & Standards: Provide all required documentation and testing results showing compliance with the standards set forth in this specification including a “GREEN” building material certification.
- Installation: Work shall be performed by Certified Installers, trained in laying, cutting, and anchoring masonry units.
- The installer of the water resistant concrete masonry units must provide documentation of current certification.
- Sample Panels: Upon approval, provide materials and labor required to construct a 4’x4’ mockup panel (or one of a dimension determined by the architect) on the project jobsite. The panel is to remain onsite during construction and will be used as a minimum standard of quality for color, texture and installation craftsmanship.
1.4 PROJECT CONDITIONS
- Comply with, ACI 530.1 ASCE.6/TMS 602 and the industry guide, “Recommended Practices & Guides Specifications for Severe (Cold-Hot) Weather, Masonry Construction”.
- Do not use frozen materials mixed or coated with ice or frost.
- Cover the masonry units when not in use.
1.5 PRODUCT DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING
- Deliver materials to the jobsite on pallets, factory stretch wrapped with the manufacturer’s labels intact and legible.
- Store concrete masonry units off the ground and covered until put into use. Materials not in use are to be covered to protect them from adverse weather and jobsite soiling.
1.6 JOBSITE CONDITIONS
- For severe weather conditions follow the “Recommended Practices & Guides specification for severe (hot & cold) weather masonry construction.
1.7 SAFETY
- Submit current manufacturer’s Product Data Sheets as well as Material Safety Data Sheets. These documents are to be available and familiar to all employees at the jobsite. These are considered working documents.
- Provide assurance that all employees are trained in and familiar with the potential hazards of handling, placing, and sawing concrete masonry.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 ACCEPTABLE MANUFACTURERS
Basis-of-Design Product: The design for water resistant block as manufactured by SEALTECH® Block Concrete Masonry Units.* Equivalent materials of other manufacturers may be submitted only by approval of the Architect.
2.2 MATERIALS
- ASTM Compliance: All concrete masonry units shall meet or exceed the specifications set forth in ASTM C-90-02.
- “GREEN” Certification: All concrete masonry units must contain a minimum of 10% POLYFILL and be certified by a third party as a “GREEN “ building material under the guidelines set forth in the LEED™ rating system.
- Sizes: Manufacturers standard sizes corresponding to nominal sizes indicated on the Drawings.
- Exposed Face: (Indicate, standard smooth or split-face)
- Color(s): (Indicate as selected from manufacturers code and full range)
- Shapes: Provide special shapes as required.
2.3 MORTAR MIXES
- Mortar for Water Resistant Masonry Assemblies: Comply with ASTM 270, Proportion Specifications for Type “S” mortar.documents.
- Approved integral water repellent admixture, to enhance the bonding and water resistance compatibility with the masonry unit.
PART 3 – EXECUTION (Refer to 04180)
3.1 INSTALLING WATER RESISTANT BLOCK WITH MORTAR.
- Installers: Verify that installers are certified in compliance with manufacturer’s requirements and OSHA regulations.
- Install CMUs with full head and bed joints at spacing indicated and coordinated with other construction, maintaining exposed joint width of 1/4” to 3/8” unless otherwise indicated.
- Assure the approved mortar additive is added in the correct proportions to insure water resistance and bonding.
- Install movement joints and reinforcement as indicated.
- Tool joints to a uniform concave finish unless indicated otherwise.
3.3 CLEANING
- In-Progress Cleaning: Clean unit masonry as work progresses by trowel swiping and dry brushing to remove mortar fins and smears
- Final Cleaning: Test cleaning methods on a sample section after the mortar is thoroughly set and cured. Clean CMU walls by method indicated in NCMA TEK 8-2A, as appropriate to wall surface stains.
